FFXI has a reputation among MMO enthusiasts for being a bit of a grindfest. The game isn't easy, and a player's ability to simply keep killing more mobs is, quite frankly, encouraged. The game may be taking things to a whole new level, however.
The raiding guild Beyond The Limitation (BTL) has recently explored the boundaries of the FFXI game grind, working their way up to the ultimate boss, Pandemonium Warden. PW is a hard boss, and BTL knew they'd face a tough fight. However, the boss simply wouldn't die. He morphed 20 times, each time changing powers and tactics. Further, some of the forms took hours to kill. After a grand total of 18 hours - yes, the guild kept fighting PW for 18 hours straight, without wiping - some of the guild members threw up, became ill, or passed out. At that point, guild leadership decided to call it quits.
Please understand that BTL is a very skilled raiding guild; they've defeated every other boss in the game, and fought this one for 18 hours without a wipe. They are asking, at this point, what Square-Enix is thinking in making this boss fight so unnecessarily difficult. This doesn't appear to be a bug or design flaw, so the question appears to be a legitimate one. 18 hours is simply way, way over the top.
Check back next week, when we explore rumors that in the next expansion, Squeenix won't let bosses die until a guild member is hospitalized IRL. If the guild member in question dies during the encounter, then the loot table changes, and the loot drops will all be epics (okay, okay, /sarcasm-off).
