Recently Disney and Marvel had a little corporate love-making, and Disney made Marvel part of it’s plot to take over the world. Here is an interview with Stan Lee talking about what this could mean for Marvel & Disney’s franchises and characters, and some ideas or places they could go with it. While that in itself doesn’t sound super spectacular, it’s wonderful just to see Stan Lee talk about something you can tell he generally loves. It’s always captivating to see someone so passionate talk about what they do.

He also talks about some of the new characters Marvel is developing for Disney. The gold for me was at 2:50 of the video, after he says the name of one of the new characters. The face he makes is pure gold. Enjoy!

Nick Simmons is famous, primarily, because he’s Gene Simmons’ son. Yes, that Gene Simmons, the demonic bassist from the rock band Kiss.

Left: Bleach / Right: Incarnate

But Nick is a talented artist in his own right. He’s now published an anime/comic of his own, entitled Incarnate. Quite suddenly, however, Incarnate is controversial. It seems that a number of the panels in Incarnate are quite similar to art in the famous manga work, Bleach. I’ve attached an example of the “plagiarized” images, so you can judge for yourself.

This controversy has been brewing for days. Now Nick Simmons has finally responded, and he had this to say:

Like most artists I am inspired by work I admire. There are certain similarities between some of my work and the work of others. This was simply meant as an homage to artists I respect, and I definitely want to apologize to any Manga fans or fellow Manga artists who feel I went too far. My inspirations reflect the fact that certain fundamental imagery is common to all Manga. This is the nature of the medium.

I am a big fan of Bleach, as well as other Manga titles. And I am certainly sorry if anyone was offended or upset by what they perceive to be the similarity between my work and the work of artists that I admire and who inspire me.

Opinions on this matter vary quite a bit. Many are positively irate that Nick so blatantly plagiarized Bleach. Others aren’t so sure. Nick, obviously, feels these are nothing more than an “homage” to artists he admires.

What do you think? Plagiarism? Too close to call? Much ado about nothing? Sound off in the comments!

Law firm demands retailer destroy all copies of Olivia Munn comic, retailer refuses

I was like, what?! How could this be? But it’s the truth. Here’s the letter requesting that HeavyInk remove a parody comic about Olivia Munn from their virtual shelves (click on image for a redirect to HeavyInk’s post):

I myself immediately headed over to Olivia Munn’s official site, thinking that she might have something up on the subject. And to my surprise, what did I find? NOTHING!!!! Her lawyers probably want her to remain silent on the subject, which would make complete sense. But still, it would be nice to see how she feels about the whole thing.

For the whole scoop from HeavyInk’s POV, head to their link.

For more on the subject, checkout BoingBoing, they’re on it like flies on….well, you know.

Well, it looks like Iron Man is getting a bit of a makeover. Of course, this is Iron Man, and he upgrades his armor constantly. I mean, practically every issue of the comic book includes an upgrade of some kind, even if many of those upgrades don’t affect the look of his current suit. (I’m personally a fan of the iMan development). On top of that, he upgrades his suit overall — thus changing the look — with fair regularity, too.

This time, the newest armor is sleeker, sexier, and more streamlined. In fact, some might argue it doesn’t look like armor, but more like an Iron Man body suit. I don’t entirely agree (I think the new armor looks very cool). This new suit was designed with the help of Ryan Meinerding, who is currently the designer of both the Iron Man and Thor movies. Yes, things have gotten all backwards. The movie designer is helping the comic book guys pick out Iron Man’s latest look. Go figure.

It doesn’t matter; the new look is hot. Check it out for yourself.

Some random nerdy news for the evening… There is an official casting call for the upcoming J. R. R. Tolkien Hobbit movie, produced by Peter Jackson and set to be directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy 2). Hooray! Hopefully this is a step in the right direction, and it won’t be too many years before we see Bilbo running around battling awesome things like the Dragon Smaug.

So all you would-be hobbit and dwarf actors out there, get cracking.

On a completely separate, but perhaps equally entertaining note… EA Sports is said to be bringing back the classic NBA Jam exclusively to the Nintendo Wii. We can only hope the big heads, flaming nets, and awesome announcer will be making a comeback.

Naturally, we’ll keep you posted on Hobbit and NBA Jam developments, wow that sounded weird together. With that being said, J. R R. Tolkien looks pretty badass with a pipe.

It didn’t take long for it to be a hit, and they’ve already got the dollar signs in their eyes because we’ve already been treated to a new teaser for the sequel.

It’s not very long, but it gives us a good look at the rotting city and of course, the crazy Joker has returned. We assume it will of course feature Mark Hamill voicing a diabolical kick-ass Joker again. Check out the teaser below!
