The action RPG is a genre that has recently made a big comeback. I mean, Torchlight — made by the guys who invented Diablo — got some great reviews, and won a couple of awards at the Games Developers Conference. So after years of lame (i.e., really bad) action RPGs, we few remaining fans of the genre finally got a great one.
There is more hope than just one game, however. Diablo III is in production, the Torchlight MMO is in production, and now we have Magicka. It debuted at the GDC last week, and the game casts all players at elementalist wizards. By combining elemental powers, these wizards can conjure fireballs, freezing blasts, elemental warriors, and other magical nonsense to battle your stereotypical fantasy monsters. The game is very tongue-in-cheek, making fun of the genre, referencing other fantasy games, and having a bit of fun with the whole bit.
