The German Buzz Bomb of Indiana

While passing through the lovely small town of Greenvastle, Indiana, I happened upon this quirky little sight: it’s a German buzz bomb.

It seems that the good people of Greencastle are the proud owners of one of two very rare Nazi buzz bombs left over after WWII. They mounted their rocket bomb in front of the county municipal building as a tribute to locals that gave their lives in war.

I’m not entirely sure I follow the logic of a giant rocket-propelled explosive utilized as a memorial in that way, but I must admit that it’s an impressive site to see nonetheless. :)

I think its an excellent memorial, and my hats off to the city of Greencastle for its display and maintenence. Buzz bombs were ‘terror’ weapons, intended to cow the British into submission. Terror then, as now, is a strategy of failure.
