We talked about the fan-made Zelda movie, The Hero of Time, not too long ago. Well, it appears Nintendo doesn’t support the exploits of these geeky movie-makers, as they decided to shut it down for copyright infringement reasons.
Yes, even dorky fan-made movies are apparently a threat to Nintendo and it’s IPs and out of all the things they are doing besides collecting money for the Wii, it was deemed important enough for them to shut down the movie. Nintendo can be seen as making some questionable decisions, but how this would have hurt their franchise remains to be unseen. They do have the right to get the movie shut down, but was it necessary?
Here’s what the creators had to say:
“Hey, everyone. We just wanted to let you know that Dec. 31 was the last day that The Hero of Time was available for viewing. We came to an agreement with Nintendo earlier this month to stop distributing the film. In the spirit of the holiday season they were good enough to let us keep the movie up for you to watch and enjoy through the end of 2009, but not past 2009. We understand Nintendo’s right to protect its characters and trademarks and understand how in order to keep their property unspoiled by fan’s interpretation of the franchise, Nintendo needs to protect itself — even from fan-works with good intentions.”
So that’s that. Drop a line, let us know what you think!
