I’m not sure who thought this idea up in the first place, but the good people at the NY Stock Exchange just have to be geeks at heart.  They apparently felt that inviting some costumed geeks in Darth Vader and Stormtrooper costumes to ring the opening bell, and open the exchange for business last week, was a fun thing to do.  Mind you, this honor is usually reserved for government officials and other blue-bloods.

Actually, come to think of it, Vader is a Sith lord.  So, I guess, that makes him royalty and (according to tradition) qualified to ring that bell.  Go figure.
