In what I can only assume will eventually be turned into some sort of web-based flash game or a Facebook App (hint hint), there has been recent footage of Humpback Whales battling over mates and other sweet loot. It’s natural to assume the obsession with epic items also carriers over in the animal kingdom, as who knows how many times we have found cleaving axes of fiery decapitation on the remains wolves, fish, and various other critters.
Loot aside, this is the first time footage of male humpback whales have been caught on film battling. The video is narrated by David Attenborough, who you’ll recognize right away if you’ve ever watched the BBC’s Planet Earth series. Mr. Attenborough has been known to have one of the most soothing British voices to grace this Earth, and some say he’s at least half-Siren.
The dialogue and music on this video is EPIC. It sounds like he’s talking about warring egos about to engage in a Starcraft championship in South Korea. Mr. Attenborough refers to it as, “The most massive battle in ALL nature.” Indeed, these things weigh like 40 tons.
The BBC is even jumpin’ on the ‘Epic‘ bandwagon with the title of the article being “Epic humpback whale battle filmed,“ and even better, producer Ted Oakes of the program Life, which will air the whale footage, had this to say about the scene, “It’s the closest we’re ever going to get to dinosaurs fighting” Seriously!? Holy crap!
There’s a whole lot of fancy wording, but don’t expect to see any whale-weaponry or tail karate-kicks. The video is still pretty impressive though, you can check out the clip after the jump.
