Classic Video Game Achievements

Achievements seem to almost have revolutionized gaming, even if not everyone pays attention to them. Little added nothings that are a good way for us all to show how we’re better, or that we’ve made sure to collect every item in the game even if it took 36 hours.

Maybe one day we will be lucky enough to have a score-based achievement system in real life. I can see it now, “Mark it down, Jim! I just finished my 700th Mountain Dew!” But I digress, for now we will just have to laugh at made-up achievements of some of our favorite classics and thanks to Gamepaper, they have decided to try just that.

    Haha :-)

Achievements are probably the most pointless “feature” videogames have come up with in the past couple of years. Actually, the idea of tracking your achievements is not that bad, it appeals to the collector instinct and has worked ever since some games started to display a “percentage completed”. But the effects this has on some people are absolutely ridiculous. Not only are there people who buy and play games they actually hate and find boring, just to collect more achievements. I have actually seen a poll on a large games website where a considerable number of people voted that they would not buy a full-price X360 game they liked if it didn’t offer achievements.

Somehow, I feel that if you don’t have fun playing games anymore, the whole exercise is a little futile.
