It seems that in the Paris National Marine Museum there’s a particular diving suit on display, and it’s very, very reminiscent of….a Big Daddy! It hails from way back in 1892, and was made by brothers Alphonse and Theodore Carmagnolle. It’s a one of a kind, and was never put into service.
You can see the similarities between the Carmagnolle suit and the Bioshock baddy in our little gallery here. It seems almost certain that this suit inspired the iconic look of the Big Daddy, as the mini-portholes in the helmet are unique.
As an aside, this guy built a modern replica of the Carmagnolle helmet (complete with the 20 mini-portholes), and took it on a dive in a French harbor. (Conclusion: it’s heavy, but it works very well.)
