You’ll no doubt remember the cataclysmic death of Flagship Studios. Their main IP, Hellgate: London, was actually a pretty good MMO (of course, opinions on that topic differ a wee little bit), but the company went under anyway. What you may not remember is that they had another IP in development, Mythos, which was basically Diablo turned into an MMO.
I played Mythos in its pre-beta state, and the game seemed pretty darned good. Interestingly, well over a year ago, one of the devs for Flagship told me that the beta for Mythos was going to start “maybe next month”. It never happened. Flagship went under right about that time, Hanbitsoft acquired the rights to Mythos, and the game disappeared.
Now, suddenly, it’s back. Well, at least it seems that way. The Mythos website has suddenly sprung to a grungy life after a loooong bout of inactivity. It’s something of a tease. It has a bit of brief flash, then it invites you sign up for the beta. It also has a nice little feature in which you hold a torch and light up a bit of mysterious concept art. Hopefully there will be more in coming days.

Mind you, the developers of Mythos all left the company (can you leave a dead company, or does it leave you?) and formed Runic Games. Hanbitsoft, presumably, hired new devs to continue development of Mythos. Runic is developing a new IP called Torchlight. What is Torchlight, you ask? It’s an MMO that plays a lot like Diablo.
