More and more movies based off games are coming out. Heck, they just announced a supposed Dead Space movie is in the works. But some are just a little more insane t
hen others…
Take Asteroids for example. I’m sure you remember it. It’s a fun 2-d game from the golden age of games were you basically control a spaceship made out of a couple lines and you blow away some asteroids that are made up out of a couple lines. Simple. Sound like a good movie?
You can read more about Asteroids the movie and even kill some space debris after the jump.
Asteroids is now apparently being made into a live-action film. Here’s what the producer, Lornezo di Bonaventura had to say about it;
“It’s funny because people say there’s nothing in the game, but that’s not entirely right, I was attracted to Asteroids, plain and simple, because I think what it tells you is that there’s going to be this big thing in space. We’ve crafted a really strong, deep mythology for the thing. Without divulging too much about it, it’s two lead characters — two brothers — who have to go through a seminal experience to figure out their relationship, against this huge backdrop.”
I guess we just weren’t playing the same titles, because I don’t even remember 1 brother from the game Asteroids and it’s a pretty big stretch to say “not entirely right” when it comes to depth of plot on ASTEROIDS. Now, it’s clearly a movie and they must take liberties, but is this really an IP that even needs a movie? Couldn’t they just name the movie something else? Like, let’s just say, Armegaddon?
What’s next? Pong the movie? Frogger? There really should be a line drawn somewhere, and Asteroids is a good starting point. Will these two pieces of media share anything more then a title and maybe a general plot line? Probably not…
However, I’m sure we’ll all be pleased as long as it involves space ships shooting gnarly weapons and blowing big stuff up, but it doesn’t mean we won’t be laughing the whole time as we watch an Asteroids movie.
If you were born in a cave and don’t remember Asteroids or if you are just bored, you can play Asteroids online for free here.
