We’ve talked about Funcom not doing so hot before, actually it’s been a few times. Age of Conan had a rough start, then it hemorrhaged when Warhammer came out and then everything came crashing down in the economy. Well, apparently Funcom’s strong push is keeping the title aliv
e with a core base of players.
Who would have thought?
The positive indications on subscriber retention from January 2009 has been reinforced and strengthened in the following months for the Age of
Conan game. This combined with an increase in new customers in Q1 2009 has led to a stable and solid subscriber base for the Game.

Increase of new customers, eh? Numbers don’t typically lie, but after the massive losses Funcom stated after last year… It’s great news for them that they are actually developing a niche player base, because it’s become pretty clear that’s most likely what they’re going to need to survive.
The entire situation is really an enigma.. With the AoC starting with a subscriber base of over 700,000 and then falling down below 100k, reporting losses for the year, and now, already in 1st quarter, reporting a comeback. Well, if it’s true, they’re sure doing better then 3D Realms.
Apparently handing out the free mounts really did help. Is Funcom really coming back? Will we eventually get to see The Secret World? Or is this a secret plan for them to survive and we’ll hear in months to come that Funcom really didn’t have gains and that the company took out a loan from it’s Grandma? Only time will tell… Let us know what you think!
