Ahh, Internet forums… They breed a certain type of geek. When will developers learn that they can and will be held accountable for their actions and words in regards to forums and censorship. It appears Bioware has been having some trouble lately as the words “gay,” “lesbian,” and “homosexual” we
re censored on the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums.
Community manager Sean Dahlberg, who apparently just wanted to throw himself in front of a huge flaming bus of internet trolling said, “As I have stated before, these are terms that do not exist in Star Wars.” That’s a pretty bold statement, as it could be taken to imply that homosexuality is viewed as askew or the wrong choice. As much as they may want to avoid or pretend that those things do not exist in their gaming world, the fact of the matter is that real people are playing their game and they’ll need to decide if those people are entitled to the same choices and freedom with their characters as any other person.
Of course, it didn’t take long for them to back down after realizing the mess they just created. All is well with the force once again… But the question remains, what do you think about homosexuality and gaming? Let us know!

Well to be fair, I believe he said the ‘terms’ do not exists. ie. They would be called something else. If anything I’d agree that it makes sense on a practical level to filter the words because they are mostly used in a negative way… a bitch is also a female dog but colloquial use puts it in most filters. The setting has just offered them a viable way to do that in lore without actually stopping the ‘concept’ from being discussed using lore appropriate terminology.
Either way, he did “throw himself in front of a huge flaming bus of internet trolling” and if they wanted to take that road there were better and more tactful ways.
