It appears that a new fight is brewing between developers as Bethesda is ready to throw down and kick some Interplay ass. Interplay has the actual rights to the Fallout MMO, as Bethesda acquired the rights to Fallout 3 but specifically left the rights of the MMO to Interplay. Well, Fallout 3 came out, was awesome, and earned boatloads of cash. So now, Bethesda feeling that they did well, may now have their eyes on the delicious MMO prize.
See, it seems that Bethesda is claiming that Interplay could keep the rights to the Fallout MMO only if they started full work on the project by April 4th of this year. Which, they haven’t. It also appears that Interplay was supposed to have secured funding for the game, which… They haven’t.
Now, there’s no denying Interplay makes great games. Fallout 1 and 2 were awesome. I’m sure we all have fond memories of Descent as well. But unfortunately it seems times have fallen bad for Interplay, and they just can’t seem to get anything done these days. Where as Bethesda has proven time and time again that they can deliver, and will.
Of course, it is still Interplays IP. So regardless of who would do better, it does still come down to that. Interplay denies this whole situation currently and A legal battle of nuclear proportions may be brewing.

I know Bethesda makes great selling games. I just don’t want to play any of them. I adored the Fallout franchise and I’m happy that the 3rd is a success, but I’d personally be disappointed to see Bethesda make the MMO if it followed along the same gameplay style as their status quo. Unfortunately, I don’t see a reason to think they’d want to change the formula even if they could. It’s making them money.
