For whatever reason, Nintendo’s information on this title is…well, pretty sparse. They’re not doing a lot to promote this potentially hugely-popular title. We’ve known a new Punch-Out! was in the works, but we didn’t know a whole lot of additional details. Here’s what we’ve been able to dig up:
- The game is for the Wii, and will use the nunchucks to control your fighter’s actions. Star Punches (remember those?) will build up and allow players to throw extra-powerful blows. Also, “classic” controls are also available, meaning you can use the control pad and buttons to fight if you prefer.
- The game appears to include a training mode, and the overall playstyle mimics the original Punch-Out! series closely. This is sure to score some points with fans of the old games.
- Many of the classic characters will appear, including Von Kaiser, King Hippo, Glass Joe, Bald Bull, your trainer, and even your avatar, Little Mac. Other, new characters are being introduced as well.
The game is due out in North America on May 18th, and this teaser trailer just (yesterday) popped up on the Nintendo Channel on the Wii. It’s still unknown if Mike Tyson appears anywhere within the game, though it doesn’t appear so. There were several iterations of Punch Out!, but the most widespread featured the ol’ ear-biter himself, and it would be a nice touch.
There simply isn’t a lot of additional information floating around out there, but when more pops up, we’ll be sure to pump out an update.
