Apparently, there’s an iPhone MMO nearing production. The concept is being produced by Last Legion games, and is based (like everything else right now) on The Watchmen.
The Watchmen: Justice is Coming takes place in New York in 1975, and the player gradually becomes one of the “costumed heroes” of The Watchmen universe. There appear to be a number of character customization options, and the gameplay is designed to be more of the “pick up and play” style. You won’t be joining a four hour raid while playing The Watchmen: Justice is Coming. You’ll be logging in 20 minutes at a time.
A few impressions: I have to say that the game looks intriguing, but very simple. The biggest concern may actually be the interface. Movement and action are done by pressing the iPhone’s touch screen, and appear to be pretty awkward. What’s more, while other players can be seen in the game with you, interacting with them appears very limited. This game may be stretching the idea of an MMO – players interacting with one another in a persistent world – a wee bit there.
A couple of other things that may, or may not, interest or concern you. The official game site is a bit quirky; it really doesn’t contain a lot of information. What’s more, we went to the Last Legion website to learn more about the company, and there’s nothing there. It’s a plain page that simply says “Last Legion Games” with a company logo. Odd.
It may be that this game is a clumsy commercial exploit of the popularity of The Watchmen, or it may be that Last Legion is a hungry startup, and this game is the genesis of something really big. The game is scheduled to be released in two days, so we’ll have to wait and see.
