In an unprecedented move, Blizzard is holding a contest of sorts for Starcraft II fans.? Consider:
The protoss dark templar has always been one of the StarCraft community’s favorite units — now, the community has a chance to participate directly in the dark templar design process for StarCraft II! Over the course of the next month, players will vote to decide which dark templar tribe will be represented in StarCraft II multiplayer matches.?
Two things immediately struck me about this “contest”.? First, players are only voting on the model, not the unit’s capabilities.? The models in question are 1) the traditional dark templar, with a warp blade and cloth mask, or 2) an updated model, with a double scythe and heavy armor.? They both function identically, however.? Second, Blizzard is offering a third option, which is that both models will appear in the game (generated randomly) when a DT is created by the player.?
C’mon, players only get to vote for the model, but not for any of the capabilities of the unit?? And did Blizzard really think many people would not vote for option 3, which allows two cool models to appear in the game instead of one?? No matter; to absolutely no one’s surprise, option 3 is winning overwhelmingly.? However, both of the above factors make me a wee bit suspicious this this is more of a promotion than an actual contest
. ?
