Goths Go Cruising

I recently had opportunity to catch the most unusual of documentaries:? Goth Cruise.? As the title implies, it’s the story of some dark, somber, black-clad people who all collectively get onto the same cruise ship.? Sound like a wacky premise?? It is.

The film itself is equally wacky.? It’s also fascinating and, at times, downright brilliant.??

More on the film, a video clip, and it’s quirky relationship to gaming, after the jump.

Like all good documentaries, Goth Cruise explores why the featured individuals are into the goth lifestyle.? It paints most of them in a sympathetic light, describes their day to day lives, and chronicles their adventures on the ship itself.? They’re good working people, they express themselves with black nail polish and dark clothes, and they occasionally find enjoyment when normals stare at them, are shocked, or become frightened. And every single one of them likes to play dress up.

The “dress up” aspect of things is where some interesting crossover takes place.? The film explores their fascination with elaborate attire at great length.? The people on the boat are primarily goths, to be sure.? However, some have got a bit of Renaissance Faire background, are into the whole steampunk thing, have a bit of LARPing in their past, or have cosplay in their souls.? I watched Goth Cruise with one of the other editors here at Wandering Goblin; both of us are familiar with the costumed scene, particularly among gamers, and the similarities were obvious.? Though gaming isn’t specifically mentioned, my colleague and I both agreed that there is a geeky undercurrent to this film that will probably appeal to gamers.? There are brief glimpses of Pandaren, knights, and other characters, familiar to the MMO crowd, throughout the film.? The subjects of this documentary could certainly blend in at any gaming convention we’ve ever been to.

Overall, we recommend this one from the depths of our dark, tormented souls.? Wink? If you’re at all interested in this quirky, offbeat documentary, check out IFC, or the filmmakers site.? It’s video on demand, so you could be watching it right now.?
