Curt Schilling: Craving Attention at Blizzcon?

First up, let me say this: I’ve long been an admirer of Curt Schilling’s humanitarian efforts, and I’ve wished for nothing but the success of his MMO startup company. I even like Curt as a person.

However, as time has marched onward, I’ve been repeatedly struck by the lack of professionalism that simply flows from 38 Studios. It all started when they held their first press conference/Q&A/public appearance at Comic Con in 2007. It was so amateurishly run, one of our reporters actually walked out. It was really, really bad.

Then came all the “look at me” press releases. You know, a press release when 38 Studios hires an executive you never heard of, a press release when they license a game engine, a press release when they upgrade their corporate website. Sorry guys, no one cares about any of that.

They’re also fond of giving “look at me” interviews, and holding press events. Mind you, they never say a thing about their game. That’s a taboo subject. It’s completely off limits. But that doesn’t stop them from getting in front of a camera, saying nothing of substance, and talking about themselves. In one classic example, they even held a panel discussion, in which they spoke mostly about their building, the cakes they’ve eaten, and Curt’s tattoo. Think I’m kidding? I’m not.
