We’d heard (via the good people at Massively) a rumor about Warhammer Online launching September 23rd.? Following some of the leads, we were able to confirm that, as of this writing, some EA websites are still carrying that date as the official launch of the much-anticipated Warhammer MMO.? Conveniently, we happened to be at Comic-Con, and we’d been kibbitzing with the Mythic people all weekend, ogling the next big thing in MMORPGs.? So we picked up our camera bags and other journalism detritus, fought the sweaty throng of adrenaline-fueled geeks, and made one more trek over to the EA booth to get an official confirmation or denial.

There we caught up with a very friendly, knowledgeable, and (for the purposes of this article) nameless PR rep for Mythic.? The following conversation took place:

Wandering Goblin:? “So…we’re hearing a rumor that September 23rd is the official launch date of Warhammer Online.”

Mythic PR Guy:? “Yeah, I heard about that.”

Wandering Goblin:? “Well?? Is it accurate?”

Mythic PR Guy:? “That depends on what you mean.”

Wandering Goblin:? “Uh…I mean, is September 23rd the launch date for WAR?”

Mythic PR Guy:? “We’re only saying that it’s going to launch this fall.”

Wandering Goblin:? “So the information is wrong?? It’s not September 23rd?”

Mythic PR Guy:? “Well, that is in the fall, so it’s correct in a sense.”

Wandering Goblin:? “But you don’t have a specific launch date.”

Mythic PR Guy:? “Actually, we do.”

Wandering Goblin:? “You do?? And you know what the scheduled launch date is?”

Mythic PR Guy:? “Yup.”

Wandering Goblin:? “Ok….is the scheduled launch date Sept. 23rd?”

Mythic PR Guy:? “We’re not announcing what the date is yet.”

Wandering Goblin:? “Ok, yeah, I get that.? But is the September 23rd date pretty close to what you know?”

Mythic PR Guy (shrugging, making hand gestures, and a scrunchy face that all indicated ‘not exactly’):? “Eh.”?

So there you have it, folks.? Yes, the whole conversation had a tongue-in-cheek, ring-around-the-rosey kind of vibe to it, but it was all in good fun.? The Mythic PR Guy wasn’t particularly rattled by the 9/23/08 date; he didn’t come across like a mistake had been made, and they’d been ‘outed’.? At one point (in response to some further poking and prodding) he even seemed to imply that the internal release date, which is apparently widely known inside Mythic, isn’t set in stone.? There are simply too many variables between now and then.

It’s safe to say that this little rumor has been duly quashed.?
