In an interview published on EuroGamer today, Gaute Godager, director of Funcom’s MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has now chosen a path of mudslinging, and World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online are in the crosshairs.
“I enjoy playing WOW, I enjoy playing Lord of the Rings Online,” confessed Godager, before taking a swipe at his American rivals.
“But you know… I’m going to be a bit cheeky now, but if you’ve been to McDonald’s for four or five years, and had your burger and your Coke, sometimes it’s great to just have a great steak and a glass of good wine. I think that’s what we’re trying to do. It’s more expensive, it’s not for everyone and perhaps it’s not as easily accessible as WOW is. But it could be more meaty,” Godager finished.
Yowza, doesn’t it seem a bit to soon for taking swipes at the larger, much more experienced dogs in the yard? Come on, you’re barely off the starting line, your game still has some fixes, you’re making promises that you still haven’t delivered on and here you are insulting larger, more successful companies.
Humility might be a wiser path to take, you think? If they’re not careful, in a few years AoC could look like this:

By no means are we questioning AoC, or putting it up on a chopping block. We actually like AoC. It’s a wonderful game, full of great graphics….but, we’ve all been playing WoW and LotRO since the first beta, and those MMOG’s have come a long way. Each game has something different to offer, therefore there will always be strengths and weaknesses. We guess it’s just about what you’re taste buds require in the moment. This Goblin personally likes canned crickett’s in a grasshopper sauce, with a side of raw worms. Mmmmmmm. Find me THAT game!
