Oh em gee!!! Quit your griping. So what if I’m writing the Day 2 Blitz in on Day 3. All three of you just need to shuddup.
If you haven’t read all about our GDC Day 1 Blitz then you didn’t hear about how the Goblins are awoken by a screaming prostitute outside their door at about 3:30am. It appears she wanted her stuff back, from her boyfriend, who just happened to be the hotel manager.
This makes me wonder: what kind of stuff would a prostitute have anyway? We’re pretty sure she had issues, so we really try hard to go back to sleep. We are unsuccessful because the crazy whore returned and decided to wake the neighborhood with her screaming, yet again. Long story short, the cops come and chase her off….3 times.
7am and the fracking alarm is screaming at us to get our lazy goblin asses out of bed. I have a dream that the alarm is saying to me, “Dudes and dudette, get the frack up biotches. Your 3 fans need you to get some rad info from the GDC.” Or something like that…it’s all kind of fuzzy.
It’s roughly 11am when we finally roll into the West hall in the Moscone Center where the GDC is being held. We obviously ignored the cries of our alarm and slept in a bit….we blame the crazy prostitute. It’s all her fault.
At noon we attended a conference that peaked our wee Goblin minds. It was a panel discussion about the future of MMO’s, but more importantly Rob Pardo was there. If you don’t know who Rob Pardo is, then you need a swift boot to the butt. He’s one of the big Blizzard cheeses and he looked a bit bored (actually, I was too). I suspect this was because of some of the questions he was having to answer….they really weren’t challenging enough. I mean, a gnat (or other very wee fly) could have answered some of them.

This is Rob Pardo. He’s bored because all the attendees want to talk about is Second Life…
There were a couple of intriguing little tidbits, however. Pardo clearly indicated that there would be another expansion after Wrath of the Lich King. Further, in reponse to a question by an audience member, Pardo rather sharply indicated that he felt a sci-fi MMO could have the same massive success of WoW. It wasn’t exactly an announcement that Blizzard is definitively working on a Starcraft MMO, but it certainly was an intriguing possibility.
There was another interesting tidbit coming out of this panel discussion. It was obvious that every single developer on the panel was of the opinion that BioWare is, in fact, working on a Mass Effect MMO. There were a number of jokes and comments on this, though BioWare’s Ray Muzyka was silent on the matter.
After the MMO discussion, we had arranged ( more like begged) for an interview with Kevin O’Hara, Game Designer for The Agency. He was awesome as he talked to us about their upcoming spy-themed MMO, slated to release for the the PC and the PS3.

Kevin and I waiting for the camera to start rolling.

The game looks awesome and we can’t wait to see it in action.
According to Kevin we’ll be able to play super-spies and secret agents and, most importantly, we’ll be able to shoot things and blow them up. The spy genre is pretty interesting as it hasn’t been attempted in an MMO platform, let alone MMO on a console system. We’ll have to keep our eyes and ears open on this one to see how it fares.
By now it’s about 2pm and we have to run to our interview with Mythos CM, Taylor Balbi who was cool enough to offer us an inside look at Mythos and all that we can expect. It’s a free-to-play, 3rd person MMO; it looks and plays a lot like Diablo. It’s got a fun, funny vibe to the whole thing. Taylor discussed the various races and classes for us, and the fact that the game goes into open beta next month. We’ve got a video of this one coming up on the site, so stay tuned.
We wrapped up the day with the completely over-the-top CCP/White Wolf party, which was freaking awesome! There was nothing but hot girls, Icelanders in leathers and a ton of spanking for the masses. Oh yeah, and booze! Those EVE game devs really know how to throw a bangup party; the Goblins still don’t know how we made it home to our fleabag motel.
While at the CCP/White Wolf party, we met up with a group of awesome people called the Outlanders (for more information on The Outlanders, continue to the end of the article), who designed and wear cool steampunk costumes to help promote an upcoming game called Recoil Retrograd by ZeitGuyz.
These guys and gals from Atlanta, Georgia are the most awesome you’ll ever meet.
Overall, the GDC was the best tradeshow of it’s size. You know you’re having fun when your body feels like it’s been hit by a semi for a few days after a big event. We saw awesome games, met great people and came home with tons of stories to tell.
Be sure to check out Evil Kristof’s birdseye view of the CCP/White Wolf party, and never forget what these Goblin’s go through to make sure you get the very best in MMO entertainment.
Cheers!
Special thanks to the Oultanders for posing for us:
